Dr.
Yoeny Calas-Dobson, DVM, has been a practicing
veterinarian for more than 20 years, with extensive education
and experience in caring for wildlife, ratites, avians, reptiles
and other exotic animals in addition to cats and dogs.
Born in Cuba, she emigrated to the United States with her
parents when she was two years old and grew up in the Miami,
Florida area where she flourished both academically and
socially.
She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of
Florida in 1980. She then pursued her Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree from the University National Autonomous de
Mexico (UNAM) located in Mexico City.
Upon her graduation in 1985, she went to the Animal Medical
Center in New York City for an intensive postgraduate program.
Later, she relocated to Oklahoma City where she enhanced her
education by specializing in Ratites (ostriches, emus, and
rheas).
She practiced emergency medicine and surgery, and performed
ranch calls to the surrounding cities. In 1993 she received her
ECFVG certificate from Oklahoma State University and relocated
to Provo, Utah. She established RiverWoods Pet Hospital in 2000,
a full service veterinary hospital that specializes in small
animal, avian and exotic pets.
As owner and founder of RiverWoods Pet Hospital in Provo, Utah,
she provides the community with the latest in conventional
Western veterinary techniques and traditional Chinese medical
care. She recently joined with four other veterinarians in
establishing Utah County's first independent after-hours animal
emergency hospital,
Pet Urgent Care, located in Orem, Utah.
Dr. Dobson established
PAS (Pet Assisted Services), a 501-C-3
organization, to fund the expenses of treating injured and sick
wildlife, domestic pets with no owners, and pets with owners who
can't afford care. This program continues to grow and benefit
animals and the people who care for them.
Dr. Dobson is a board member of American Indian Services, a
non-profit organization that helps Native Americans improve
their quality of life through scholarships. She assists them by
providing free veterinary and medical services on reservations.
An active UVMA board member for over 5 years and Utah Valley VMA
president from 2002 - 2005, Dr. Dobson established the monthly "IHOP
Morning Breakfast" for her colleagues allowing them to meet,
network ideas, and support one another in their chosen
disciplines. She has also represented the Central Region for the
UVMA State Board since 2002 and is currently on the Public
Relations Committee and the Emergency Response Committee for the
state board.
Dr. Dobson is an enthusiastic horsewoman and owns several breeds
of horses, including Arabian, Paint and Quarter horses. She
enjoys the outdoors and adventure in the high mountains of the
Pauhvant range in Holden, Utah, as well as the surrounding
areas. Dr. Dobson also has an ostrich ranch in Mexico in
association with the UNAM veterinary school.
A firm believer in education, Dr. Dobson takes every opportunity
to expand her veterinary knowledge and to share it with the
community through ventures such as PetWise radio, featured
interviews on KUTV-2, public speaking engagements, and the
Internet with her websites,
